About the event

Our guided walk will explore the fascinating Nevendon Washland Nature Reserve, a site created as part of a major mitigation project in south Essex and now home to a rich mix of habitats and species. Established more than 15 years ago through habitat and species translocation, Nevendon offers a unique opportunity to explore how a purpose‑created landscape develops once the groundworks are done and long‑term management takes over.

 

The visit will be led by herpetofauna specialist Jon Cranfield, who — alongside his father Ray — has been involved in the reserve’s creation, evolution and care since the very beginning. Their continuous oversight has shaped everything from early habitat establishment to the ongoing management of grassland, scrub, wetland features, woodland edges and seasonal wet areas.

 

Although the site includes a large number of ponds, they sit within a much broader network of habitats. We will look at how these…
